This draft policy should be read in conjunction with AngloGold Ashanti’s business principles which expand on the company’s commitment to Health, Safety, Environmental, Community, Ethical and Labour issues.
AngloGold Ashanti is committed to upholding human rights within our operations and to promoting human rights in the communities and countries where we do business. We will comply with laws, regulations, standards and international conventions which apply to our businesses and to our relationships with our stakeholders.
AngloGold Ashanti supports the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Fundamental Rights Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), and those principles and values referred to in the United Nations Global Compact. In addition, the company will be guided by the Sustainable Development principles of the International Council for Mining and Metals and the Council for Responsible Jewellery practice.
AngloGold Ashanti will seek to ensure that, through the consultative mechanisms put in place to ensure a continuing dialogue between itself and communities, it is aware of and appropriately responsive to developments which may have a bearing on respect for human rights in its areas of operations.
Although AngloGold Ashanti has no public administrative or executive authority, in a context where the protection of human rights may be at risk, the company recognises that private dialogue with state institutions may be constructive in ensuring respect for the rights of citizens.
Consistent with these commitments to upholding human rights, the company subscribes to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights and is committed to implementing these principles in its management systems and practices.
The company will report annually on significant incidents regarding human rights on and around its operations and its performance in implementing the Voluntary Principles.
