In 2005 a total of 605 employees were retrenched in a phased retrenchment programme. Retrenched employees may take advantage of skills training which is valid for a period of three months from the date of retrenchment.
As at the end of December 2005, a total of 722 former Ergo employees had received skills training in a number of fields. Training, which includes driving, plumbing, carpentry and welding, is now conducted on an individual basis. Ergo has employed the services of St Anthony’s, a church-based organisation, to conduct this training at a cost of R2 500 per employee.
Ergo’s social plan commitments, including future forum initiatives and meetings, stress counselling, business start-ups, community upliftment and involvement, and limited redeployment to other AngloGold Ashanti operations, will continue until the retrenchment programme is finally completed in 2008. |
