Sustainability Vision 


To change the way people experience the company, through positive engagement and development for mutual benefit, across all stages of the mine life cycle. We focus on the wellbeing and development of employees, building a resilient company and contributing to the development of economically, socially and physically resilient host communities and environments.

As a company we are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen, so that our behaviour reflects our values and concern for our shareholders, employees, their families, our host communities and the environments in which we live and operate.  We believe that the wellbeing of society and the natural world is critical for our business to thrive. We are committed to operating sensitively, and partnering with communities to create lasting mutual benefit. 

Material Issues

We are aware of the need to develop a robust and practical approach to determining materiality in the context of sustainability. Material issues inform our strategic approach and guide our work. By way of example, the materiality of social, environmental and health legacies is so pertinent that it features as a specific focus area in our strategy, whilst managing and meeting internal and external expectations shapes our focus on partnerships and engagement. Our Sustainability Strategy

Sustainability is core to our business. Our strategy recognises that we conduct business in an evolving global landscape and our ability to achieve sustainable outcomes is intertwined with people, politics, the planet and the economy. We acknowledge an increasing complexity in our operating environments, with heightened expectations for business to contribute meaningfully to social, economic and environmental development and protection.

In executing our strategy, we seek to embed sustainability into all aspects of our business and value chain, from the initiation of exploration activities to post-closure activities. We believe this approach leaves us better equipped to address legacy issues, anticipate and manage current and future risks, and capitalise on opportunities. While the risks faced by mining companies continue to escalate, mining has the potential to act as a catalyst for development. As we seek to create a legacy of sustainable development for our shareholders and stakeholders alike, we recognise that this cannot be achieved in isolation, and a collaborative approach is a prerequisite t​o success.​

Our Sustainability Framework

The sustainability framework is intended to build effective cross-functional working relationships within the sustainability portfolio as we implement the strategy. It embodies the philosophy that sustainable outcomes are achievable through the integration of sustainability thinking and practice throughout the organisation. It also presents a high level outline of the relationship between strategy design and execution, as well as broad accountabilities within the company’s current three tier organisational structure.

 Did you know?

      Central banks bought 534.6 tonnes of gold in 2012 - the highest level since 1964.
      In 2001, a remarkable feat was achieved when Boston Scientific’s gold-plated stent (the Niroyal) was used for the first time in heart surgery.  The stent is inserted in large arteries and veins to ensure the blood vessels stay open and adequate blood flow is available.
      The purity of gold is measured in carat weight. The term “carat” comes from “carob seed,” which was standard for weighing small quantities in the Middle East. Carats were the fruit of the leguminous carob tree, every single pod of which weighs 1/5 of a gram (200 mg).
      The chemical symbol for gold is AU, from the Latin word aurum meaning “shining dawn” and from Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn.
      The Olympic gold medals awarded in 1912 were made entirely from gold. Currently, gold medals are covered in six grams of gold.
      Gold is edible. Some Asian countries put gold in fruit, jelly snacks, coffee, and tea.
