Safety conversation in Brazil

Dilson Vieira de Aquino Júnior is a 38-year-old Simba and Jumbo operator. He works in Cuiaba Mine, in Minas Gerais (Brazil) and always observes our safety guidelines in his daily work. Affable and easy to chat to, Dilson shows that it is possible to live by the company’s values.

After living in the United States for a while, he returned to Brazil some years ago “to fall in love with my beautiful country, the woman that is now the mother of my three children and to be a proud member of AngloGold Ashanti’s workforce”. In this interview, he shares with us how he integrates safety in his day-to-day work:

Q: What do you understand by 'Safety is our first value'?

It’s a call on all of us at AGA to observe the company’s safety prescriptions and standards, to ensure that we don’t worry about returning home safely after every shift.

Q: How is this value applied consistently?

Yes, I see safety guidelines and standards being applied more and more each day at work, giving me the ability and autonomy to question and even stop a process if it doesn’t seem safe for me or a co-worker.

Q: And about the other values, what do you think about them?

I have found them to be useful not only at work, but on a personal basis for me and my family.

Q: In your opinion, what is Project ONE about?

Project ONE has made our lives a lot easier with detailed operational processes for each of our work areas, thus avoiding mistakes that could lead to preventable accidents.

Q: In your opinion, how is the company’s strategies integrated?

With all the training and information that is being passed on to us, I believe that we are on the road to achieving our goal of going Beyond Zero Harm.

Q: Do you feel proud to work for the company? What is rewarding to you?

Yes, I do feel very proud to work here, particularly knowing that after a day’s work I go home to my family safe.

Q: In your perspective, do our Values add to your experience as an employee?

Most certainly, yes! For what I see on the news of other mining companies, without our values I would certainly not want to be a gold miner.
